GLSCL Recap - July 25

GRAND LAKE MARINERS  10  HAMILTON JOES  5  -  FINAL

MONTGOMERY FIELD - The Grand Lake Mariners secured the number one overall seed for the upcoming GLSCL playoffs with a 10-5 victory over the Hamilton Joes at Montgomery Field.

The Mariners (33-9) win coupled with the Lima Locos (31-11) loss to the Flag City Sluggers puts Grand Lake ahead of Lima by two full games for the top spot. This means the Mariners have the home field advantage through both rounds of the GLSCL playoffs that begin on Monday.

The win also ties Grand Lake win three other franchises for most regular season wins with 33. The Toledo Glass Sox, a charter member of the GLSCL, set the record in 1988 during the league's second season of operation. The 2000 Northern Ohio Baseball Club team tied the mark in during its remarkable five year history. The Muskegon Clippers were the most recent team reaching 33 wins when they went 33-5 in 2023. Northern Ohio was the only of those teams to win the GLSCL Championship the first of its three-peat from 2000-02.

The Mariners had to fight from underneath in this game as the Joes were leading 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when the Hamilton bullpen imploded allowing Grand Lake to score nine runs on just two hits.

At one point two different Hamilton pitchers combined to walk seven straight batters. The Joes also gave up one run on a wild pitch, another on a passed ball and committed a balk for good measure.

Landon Tiesing (Bellarmine University) had the best offensive day for the Mariners going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Christian Douglass (Lansing CC) pitched two shutout innings earning his fourth victory of the season. Douglass gave up just one hit while recording three strikeouts en route to improving his record to 4-2 on the season.

Peter Heintz (Northwood University commit) had a day at the plate for the Joes with a game-high four hits. Heintz, who just finished his career at Grand Rapids CC this past spring, was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

These same two teams will meet in the GLSCL South Division playoff series. Hamilton (21-19) will host game one on Monday at Foundation Field starting at 7:05pm. Game two and the if necessary game three will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday in Celina at Montgomery Field.

FLAG CITY SLUGGERS  6  LIMA LOCOS  4  -  FINAL

MARATHON DIAMONDS - The Flag City Sluggers finished the season with an above .500 record for the first time after defeating the Lima Locos 6-4 on Saturday at Marathons Diamonds.

The Sluggers finished its second season of existence with a 21-20 record after taking two out of three games from the Locos in the final series of the season. Flag City finished 20-20 in its debut season in 2025 just missing out on the playoffs.

The Sluggers broke up 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. Back-to-back RBI-singles by Brandon North (Bluffton University) and Draden Wardrop (Oakland University) gave Flag City a 4-2 advantage. 

In the fifth inning, the Sluggers tacked on a run when Atticus Huffstutler (University of Akron) delivered one of his three hits on the night driving home Mickey Anderson Montgomery College). The Sluggers added another insurance run in the sixth when North scored on a double off the bat of Trent Smith (Owens CC).

The Locos scored twice in the seventh cutting into the deficit starting when Desmond Francis (Notre Dame commit) scored on an RBI-ground out by Elijah Buffaloe (Bethune-Cookman). Grant McGuire's (Winthrop University) singled through the left side chasing home Cameron Owens (University of Kentucky) making the score 6-4.

Sluggers pitcher Max Dunaway (Florida Southern) came in out of bullpen charged with the task of recording the final four outs. Dunaway got the third out of the eighth inning and struck out back-to-back Locos batters beginning the ninth inning. Dunaway pitched himself into a jam allowing back-to-back two-out walks bringing the potential go ahead run to the plate. Dunaway recovered getting Gabe Gonzalez (Mercer University) to chase a pitch out of the strikeout zone striking out the side putting an end to the threat and the game.

The Locos (31-11) will get a day off preparing for defense of its GLSCL Championship. The journey starts Monday with the trip to Muskegon for game one against the Clippers at Marsh Field beginning at 6:35pm. Just as in the South Division, the higher seed will host game two and the if necessary game three on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  11  MICHIGAN MONARCHS  8  -  FINAL

HILLSDALE COLLEGE - The Muskegon Clippers secured the number three overall seed in the upcoming GLSCL playoffs with an 11-8 victory on the road over the Michigan Monarchs. The Clippers sweep the series over the Monarchs giving them momentum going into next week's GLSCL playoffs.  

Isaiah Domey (Michigan State) put an explanation point on a strong season at the plate going 3-for-6 with three doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored. Domey finished the season leading the GLSCL with seven home runs and 37 RBI hitting for an impressive .319 batting average.

Domey broke the seal driving in the first two runs in the first inning with the first of his three doubles. Domey then scored himself when Taylor Head (Freed Hardeman) hit an RBI-single to left field.

The Monarchs (15-24) tied the game in the second inning starting with a two-run single by Cole Novara (Michigan State commit). The next batter, Manny Gutierrez (Henry Ford CC), delivered an RBI-single of his own driving in Ryan McKay (Macomb CC). Michigan briefly took the lead in the third inning when Tylor Morehouse (Barry University) scored on a base hit by Cam Driscoll (Owens CC).

The Clippers (22-19) took the lead back for good scoring four times in the fifth inning. Domey struck again with an RBI-double driving in Ben Meyers (Aquinas College). Two outs later, Domey scored on a double by Head. Head scored on a single by Nick Moss (Milligan College) who advanced to second base on an outfield error. Moss then scored an unearned run thanks to an RBI-double by Nolan Laskey (Grand Valley State).

After being left out of last season's playoff the Clippers are back hosting on Monday in the opener of the GLSCL North Division series. The defending champion Lima Locos come to town for game one with the series moving to Simmons Field for game two and the if necessary game three on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

XENIA SCOUTS  8  SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS  2  -  FINAL

BOB WREN STADIUM - The Xenia Scouts wrapped up the season winning four out of its last five games with a season finale 8-2 victory over the Southern Ohio Copperheads at Bob Wren Stadium. 

The Scouts jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and were never threatened in the contest. Steven Schneider (Maryville University) lead off the game reaching on a walk. Schneider stole second base, advancing to third on a passed ball scoring on a sacrifice fly by Bo Solley (Harding University). Later in the first inning, Owen Roether (Southwest Tennessee CC) scored on an RBI-single by Drew Snipes (Bluffton University).

Xenia scored four runs in the second inning starting with an RBI-double by Mack Skeels (The Masters University). Skeels then scored on a double by Schneider. Schneider stole home on a delayed double steal with Solley. Solley crossed the plate on an second RBI-single by Snipes. The Scouts finished the early onslaught in the third inning when Trey Tipton (Cedarville University) scored from third base on an RBI-groundout by Cooper Schutte (Harding University).

Southern Ohio left fielder Cal Leighton (Bradley University) finished his season the right way going 3-for-4 at the plate. Nate Silvus (Davis & Elkins) also had a multi-hit game with a pair of singles and a stolen base.

The Scouts (12-29) ended the season on a bright spot after suffering through an 18-game losing streak finishing the year going 4-1 in its last five game. The Copperheads wrapped up dismal season on the field finishing with an 8-32 record.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The GLSCL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that is one of 12 members of the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball (NACSB). The league currently consists of eight active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
