GLSCL Recap - July 17

LIMA LOCOS  11  MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  1  -  FINAL/7 Innings

SIMMONS FIELD - The Lima Locos opened up a weekend home stand with an impressive 11-1 run-rule victory over the Muskegon Clippers at Simmons Field.

The Locos win on Friday improves its record to 28-9 surpassing the idle Grand Lake Mariners for the best overall record in the GLSCL. Grand Lake's game in Southern Ohio was suspended in the second inning and will be made up Saturday as part of a double header.

The game in Lima started with a nearly half hour delay due the storms in the area during batting practice. Both teams got off the a slow start but the Locos eventually warmed up turning up the heat at the plate.

Cameron Greene (Southeastern Louisiana University) and Braylon Cordonnier (Marshall University) provided RBI-singles for Lima in the third and fourth innings respectively. The Clippers pushed across a run in the fifth when Isaiah Domey (Michigan State) grounded into a fielder's choice with runners on the corners driving in Nick Moss (Milligan College).

The Locos then broke the game wide open scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Greene reached on an infield single leading off the inning, he came around to score after three straight walks. Cordonnier's single through the left side drove in two more runs. Avery Wilson (Kennesaw State) delivered a two-run double and scored on and single to center field by Elijah Buffaloe (Bethune-Cookman).

The Locos finished off the Clippers in the seventh starting with Wilson scoring on a base hit by Greene. Shane Miranda (Notre Dame) walked it off bringing home Buffaloe and Greene with a two-run single to right field.

Taylor Echols (Miami University) got the win pitching four shutout innings. Echols racked up six strikeouts giving up two hits and three walks. Ryne Michaeloff (LSU Eunice) pitched the final three innings earning his third save of the season.

Wilson had an impressive night at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, the runs scored and three stolen bases. Greene also had three hits as the Locos totals 14 base knocks for the game. 

Dalton Dick (Arkansas Pine Bluff) was 3-for-4 accounting for half of the six hits generated by the Clippers offense. The Clippers record fell to 19-17 losing a half game in its advantage over the Flag City Sluggers. The Clippers and Sluggers are battling it out for the second playoff spot out of the GLSCL North Division.

The middle game of the season takes place in Lima at Simmons Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.

HAMILTON JOES  8  XENIA SCOUTS  4  -  FINAL

GRADY'S FIELD - The Hamilton Joes held off the Xenia Scouts locking up an 8-4 win on Grady's Field at Browne Stadium on a rainy Saturday night.

The Joes chipped away leading throughout taking an 8-0 advantage into the bottom of the ninth inning. 

Xenia scored four times while facing its final out of the game. The Scouts avoided the shutout when Steven Schneider (Maryville University) delivered a two-run single driving home Mayo Fernandez (Northern Kentucky University) and Drew Snipes (Bluffton University). Back-to-back walks followed loading the bases. Schneider was forced home from third base when Ethan Moore (North Alabama) was hit by a pitch cutting the Joes lead to 8-3.

With the bases still loaded and two outs, Dawson Cleveland (Grace College) singled to left field easily scoring Bo Solley (Harding College) from third base. The runner on second base was also waved home. Hamilton left fielder Nate Colyer (Ohio Wesleyan) came up firing throwing was a one-hop beauty right to catcher Gavin Brewer (University of Cincinnati). Brewer laid the tag down on a sliding Owen Roether (Southwest Tennessee CC) for the game's final out.

The loss is unfortunately indicative of this recent rough stretch for the Scouts (8-28) as they see it losing streak grow to 18 games. 

Dean Brown (Chattahoochee Valley) had everything to do with keeping the Scouts offense stuck in neutral. Brown pitched five shutout innings for the Joes giving up just two hits and registering 11 strikeouts.

Brady Bowen (Ball State University) was the catalyst at the plate for the Joes going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Joes win its 20th game of the season improving its record to 20-15 sitting comfortably in second place in the GLSCL South Division standings.

The series shifts to Hamilton for the middle-game of the three-game set. First pitch at Foundation Field is scheduled for 7:05pm.

GRAND LAKE MARINERS  1  SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS  0 -  SUSPENDED Top of 2nd Inning

BOB WREN STADIUM - The Grand Lake Mariners gained an early 1-0 lead over the Southern Ohio Copperheads when rain fell on the area during the second inning. The game was eventually suspended and will be made up as a double header on Saturday in Celina at Montgomery Field.

FLAG CITY SLUGGERS  2   MICHIGAN MONARCHS  -  SUSPENDED Bottom of 2nd Inning

MARATHON DIAMONDS - The Flag City Sluggers had just overcome an early 1-0 deficit scoring twice in the second inning when its game with the Michigan Monarchs was halted by lightning.

In an abundance of caution, everyone was ushered quickly to shelter but unfortunately in the meantime storms deluged the area before the tarp was pulled putting an end to the night's festivities. The game was suspended and will be picked up at the point of interruption on Sunday.

The teams had a regularly scheduled double header set for Saturday in Michigan at Southgate Anderson High School beginning at 3:05pm.

The GLSCL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that is one of 12 members of the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball (NACSB). The league currently consists of eight active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
