GLSCL Recap - July 12
The Mariners extend its win streak to 18 games by scoring 19 runs and the Locos complete its series sweep as both teams remain atop of its respective divisions in the GLSCL.
GRAND LAKE MARINERS 19 FLAG CITY SLUGGERS 5 - FINAL/7 Innings
MONTGOMERY FIELD - The Grand Lakes Mariners stretched its winning streak to 18-games winning in dominating fashion pummeling the Flag City Sluggers 19-5 at Montgomery Field.
Grand Lake snapped a 5-5 tie exploded for 14 runs in the fifth inning triggering the mercy rule. The Mariners batted around its lineup twice in the inning sending 18 batters to the plate. The Sluggers didn't help its cause only giving up six hits in the inning issuing five walks and hitting three batters.
Grand Lake third basemen Parker Vaughn (Lansing CC) was one of the many offensive heroes for the Mariners. Vaughn went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, four RBI and three runs scored.
Landon Tiesing (Kent State University) only had one hit but its was a big one on his way to driving in five RBI. Tiesing was issued a bases loaded walk, hit a sacrifice fly and smoked a bases clearing three-double capping off the 14-run fifth inning.
The Sluggers actually lead in this game 4-0 starting the contest by scoring three times in the first inning. The Sluggers loaded the bases when Cameron Spezia (Oakland University) wiped the slate clean with a double to right field. Darren Wardrop (Oakland University) crossed the plate in the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jimmy LaForce (Salem University).
The Mariners chipped away starting in the bottom of the second inning. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Marek Bolson (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) followed by Tiesing cut the deficit in half.
Grand Lake tied the score with an two-run single by Vaughn in the third inning. The two teams traded single runs in the fourth inning before the Mariners 14-run fifth inning.
Taylor Seay (Arkansas State) pitched the first five innings earning the victory of the Mariners. Kaden Plank (Indiana Tech) threw two shutout innings giving up just one hit closing out the victory.
Grand Lake improved to 27-5 on the season with a commanding eight and a half game lead over the second place Hamilton Joes in the South Division standings.
Flag City (17-16) fell into a tie with the Muskegon Clippers for second place in the North Division standings.
The Mariners begin a four-game series on Tuesday hosting a double header against the North Division leading Lima Locos. The Sluggers return home welcoming the Southern Ohio Copperheads to Marathon Diamonds.
LIMA LOCOS 5 XENIA SCOUTS 2 - FINAL
GRADY'S FIELD - The Lima Locos completed a three-game sweep of the Xenia Scouts with a 5-2 road win on Sunday on Grady's Field at Browne Stadium in Xenia.
The Locos took an early 2-0 lead when Braylon Cordonnier (Marshall University) delivered a two-run single scoring both Grand McGuire (Winthrop University) and Shane Miranda (Notre Dame).
In the third inning, the Scouts pushed two runs across starting when Cooper Schutte (Harding University) scored when Owen Roether (Southwest Tennessee CC) reached on a Lima error. Mayo Fernandez (Northern Kentucky University) produced an RBI-single tying the score at 2-2 when Steven Schneider (Maryville University) rang the bell.
The game remained tied 2-2 until the eighth inning. McGuire broke up the deadlock thanks to a two-run double driving home both Cameron Greene (Southeastern Louisiana University) and Cameron Owens (University of Kentucky). McGuire came around to score on an RBI-ground out by Gabe Gonzalez (Mercer University).
Ryne Michaeloff (LSU Eunice) held the Scouts at bay pitching the final four innings improving his record to 3-0 on the season. Michaeloff didn't allow a run only surrendering two hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
The Locos (23-8) remind atop of the GLSCL North Division standings seven and a half games ahead of both the Flag City Sluggers and the Muskegon Clippers. Lima renews the GLSCL's longest standing rivalry on Tuesday making the short trip to Celina for a double header at Montgomery Field.
Xenia's struggles continue dropping its 15th straight game. The Scouts (8-25) will lick its wounds before making the trip to Muskegon for a three-game series against the Clippers at Marsh Field.
ABOUT THE GREAT LAKES SUMMER COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The GLSCL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that is one of 12 members of the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball (NACSB). The league currently consists of eight active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
