GLSCL Recap - July 10
The Clippers win a thriller with some late inning heroics. The Monarchs take the first game in its series in Athens while two other games are rained out.
MUSKEGON CLIPPERS 9 HAMILTON JOES 7 - FINAL
FOUNDATION FIELD - The Muskegon Clippers used some late inning heroics on its way to a 9-7 road win over the Hamilton Joes on Friday at Foundation Field.
The win moves the Clippers (16-15) a half game closer to the second place Flag City Sluggers in the battle for the second GLSCL North Divisions playoff spot. With the Sluggers rained out, Muskegon is now just one and a half games behind Flag City in the standings.
In the top of the seventh inning, first basemen Isaiah Domey (Michigan State) blasted a two-run homer tying the game 7-7.
Domey came back to the plate in the ninth with the one out and the go ahead run standing at third base. Domey worked a 15-pitch at bat including fouling off eight pitches to work a base on balls. After Domey stole second base, Ben Meyers (Aquinas College) was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Dalton Dick (Arkansas Pine Bluff) then was unintentionally walked forcing home Kaden Howard (Grand Valley State). Domey scored an insurance run on a wild pitch as the Clippers did its damage without the benefit of a hit.
The Joes (17-12) pitching staff struggled to throw strikes especially in the ninth inning issuing five of its 10 walks in the game during the Clippers game winning rally.
Zane Gregg (Davenport University) held off the Joes on the mound closing it out for the Clippers. Gregg pitched the final three and 1/3 innings notching seven strikeouts out of the bullpen. He struck out the side in both the seventh and eighth innings earning his first victory of the season.
Domey and Meyers helped carry the offense each delivering two hits. Domey finished the night 2-for-4 with the game-tying homer, four RBIs, three runs scored and one epic walk. Meyers reached base four times with two doubles and two walks.
Ryder Kirtley (Miami University) and A.J. Gundler (Lincoln Trail) each had two hits out of the Joes six base knocks on the night.
The series wraps up in Hamilton with a double header scheduled on Saturday getting started at 4:05pm.
MICHIGAN MONARCHS 9 SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS 5 - FINAL
BOB WREN STADIUM - The Michigan Monarchs took the first game of its weekend road series in Athens defeating the Southern Ohio Copperheads 9-5 at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Monarchs (10-19) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead cruising to the victory. Michigan scored four runs in the second followed by two more in the third inning.
Casey Robertson (High Point) broke the seal crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Braylon Orsette (Henry Ford CC). J.T. Thomas (Saginaw Valley State) scored on a wild pitch followed by back-to-back RBI-singles by J.J. Fontana (Colrado State Pubuelo) and Ryan Metz (Macomb CC).
The Monarchs tacked on two more runs in the third inning thanks to a two-run double by Cole Novara (Michigan State). Michigan extended it lead to 7-0 in the fifth inning with Orsette doubled home Thomas.
The Copperheads (6-25) responded in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring three runs. Wyatt Fether (Clarion University) scored on a wild pitch. Easton Nuzum (Muskingum University) was driven home thanks to an RBI-ground out by Zach Reeder (Sienna Heights University). Fox Spears (Hanover College) doubled to right home allowing Brady Kaufman (Princeton University) to scored from second base.
Chance Sobbry (Central Michigan) hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot for the Monarchs in the eight inning.
Reeder narrowed the deficit with a two-run single in the ninth but it wasn't enough for the Copperheads to complete its comeback.
Ryan Walters (Saginaw Valley State) finished off the Southern Ohio rally capping a four and 2/3 innings bullpen appearance earning his second win of the season.
The series finishes up on Saturday on the campus of Ohio University with first pitch scheduled for 5:05pm.
GRAND LAKE MARINERS @ FLAG CITY SLUGGERS - Postponed
MARATHON DIAMONDS - The Grand Lakes Mariners 15-game winning streak was put on hold as its game against the Flag City Sluggers in Findlay was rained out. The postponed game will be made up as part of a double header on Saturday at Marathon Diamonds beginning at 5:05pm.
LIMA LOCOS @ XENIA SCOUTS - Postponed
GRADY'S FIELD - The Xenia Scouts and Lima Locos waited it out but eventually postponed its game on Friday night in Xenia. That game is being made up as a double header Saturday in Lima with first pitch at Simmons Field scheduled for 4:35pm.
ABOUT THE GREAT LAKES SUMMER COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The GLSCL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that is one of 12 members of the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball (NACSB). The league currently consists of eight active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
